The Hickinbotham Family have been involved in the art of wine making since 1936. They have been at the forefront of Australian wine production for three generations. This dates back to the early 1920’s when grandfather ’Hick’ initiated Australia’s first scientific wine making course at Roseworthy College. The use of the pH meter in Australian winemaking has been attributed to his foresight and expertise, and it’s implementation has helped put Australia’s wines on the international level they have achieved.
It was in 1988 that Andrew (and partner Terryn) discovered and purchased the Dromana property and began his own journey into winemaking. In true Hickinbotham tradition, Andrew has made his mark in cool climate grape production, planting as many as 26 small vineyards across the Peninsula.
Hickinbotham of Dromana consists of a 15 acre Vineyard surrounded by open grassed woodland with a large ornamental dam. Five acres of land is dedicated to "Land for Wildlife" and contains important remnant bush.
The property consists of a Cellar Door facility for wine tasting and sales. The room has a rustic charm and relaxing ambience which insinuates itself into all visitors. In winter visitors are welcomed by a crackling open fire, and on weekends with live music.
The property is also home to the Hickinbotham Café Restaurant which can seat up to 90 people within the enclosed verandah. We have just installed a new outside brick paved decking with can seat a further 100 people on warm days.
The view from the Cellar Door, Cafe Restaurant and newly paved decking is wonderful. Look across the vines to Safety Beach on Port Phillip Bay where you can catch the Tasmanian ferry sail by, and the sun going down in the west.
